I got together with a few really good friends this past weekend. We were just hanging out at a local wine and ale establishment catching up on the latest news with each other. We haven’t had a chance to do that much over the last couple years. Covid, lockdowns, all the stress and divisiveness. You know. I don’t have to tell you I’m sure.
Oh my goodness, one of my friends had just quit her job with no backup plan! Yikes! Another friend had bailed on a long term relationship. Most of us had purchased multiple self help books off Amazon.
After a few hours and several beers for some and wine for the others, I guess we kind of came to a conclusion; well maybe a consensus. Although none of us were quite sure exactly what was missing in our lives, one thing was crystal clear. We were all trying to find the missing “thing” in our lives. Whatever that is!
One of my best friends at the hangout is a family therapist. She said something very simple, very enlightening that completely silenced the group. I mean, it seems really simple and obvious, but every one of us that night agreed that this was, at least, part of “the thing”.
Here’s What She Said
She said it’s common for people to put their own well-being on the back burner in favor of more urgent matters such as business meetings, social events, and family duties. Of course, there are times this is necessary (and can help with self-care in some instances). But we also have to make time for ourselves when we need it. Finding the time to take care of yourself is critical if you want to achieve your full potential in all aspects of your life. If we nourish and care for our physical, emotional, and mental well-being it can have a powerfully positive impact on our lives in a variety of ways.
Helps Us to Maintain Perspective
Self-care, in whatever form it takes, gives us time to contemplate and, as a result, helps us better comprehend who we are. To better grasp what is important and what is not, we must rearrange our priorities so that we can better recognize our triggers. Having this perspective can help us lead a better life because it helps us recognize when stress is appropriate and when it is not.
Helps Us To Keep Positive
For our mental and emotional well-being, self-care is essential. Those who prioritize their own well-being are more likely to be upbeat and see the bright side of adversity. It’s a good technique to avoid giving in to negative feelings and instead keep a positive frame of mind.
Improves Our Relationships
We are better able to communicate with and help others when we spend time on ourselves. When we take care of ourselves, we are better able to interact with people and sustain healthy relationships because we are better able to take care of ourselves.
Improves Our Work Performance
It’s easy to think of self-care as a luxury, but it can have a far-reaching impact on our lives and the lives of those around us. People who prioritize their own well-being are more likely to enjoy greater physical and mental health. This in turn allows them to be more productive at work. Their focus, emotional stability, and interpersonal connections are all likely to be improved. In the job, all of these factors will help you perform better and be more productive.
Self-care can take time, but the benefits far outweigh the cost. Establishing a regimen that includes self-care habits, whatever that means to you, will pay off in the long run. Self-care is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle and should not be forgotten or ignored.
